The role will report to the managing director and is directly responsible for the control, cost management, and leadership of teams of both directly employed and subcontract engineers and additional support staff within the contracts department. An effective relationship with customers their professional teams, direct and subcontract staff is essential.
- Required to take direct management responsibility of operations on Mechanical projects, ensuring projects are completed safely, to a high quality standard, on time and within budget.
- Manage all aspects of programming of works and monitoring building progress; specified and alternative equipment submittals, compliance with regulations and issue weekly progress reports.
- Supervision of personnel on site specialist sub-contract, agency and direct employees.
- Co-ordination of installation – review design process to ensure that installations are fit for purpose.
- Ensure weekly progress reporting is issued, for example RFI’s, procurement schedules, technical submittals, program responses, critical date, identification and any documentation that is specific to projects which you are involved in. In order to achieve this, it is important that a full understanding of all aspects of the project is known.
- Oversee the contracting process with chosen sub-contractors and ensuring all works are carried out correctly and as per contract and specification.
- Co-ordination of plant movement and plant records, maintaining log records up to date and reporting plant issues.
- Co-ordination of delivery of materials to site, when required, including checking quantity and quality of deliveries and taking full responsibility for same.
- Liaison with clients, professional teams, main contractors and other trades personnel as and when required including attendance at all project related and management meetings.
- Hold regular progress meetings with both the design team and sub-contractors and effectively control the use of both labor and materials – Carry out surveys of installations -Ensure the installations are ready for commissioning on the due dates and manage commissioning so that no liquidated damages are incurred on any projects -Inspection, testing, commissioning and witnessing plans.
- Will play a key role in the value engineering process of the project which will include setting budgets, achieving targets, identifying variations and changes. Closely monitoring the usage of materials and resources on site.
- Help prepare / complete project cost plans and ensure all projects are achieving targets.
- Close out project successfully and to budgeted profit levels. Commercial awareness requesting and monitoring of instructions and issuing same to consultant engineers/quantity surveyors. Issue of work records and labor returns, RFI, CVI, Technical submittals and the provision of information or costing of variations etc.
- Procurement of subcontract, plant and materials in conjunction with other departments taking full responsibility for achieving commercial buying targets.
- Ensure subcontract/plant scopes are prepared to ensure that there are no grey areas in the package and to ensure that risks are offset via the supply chain.
- Ensure productivity monitoring is put in place for all direct employed/agency operatives.
- Take on additional duties and responsibilities from time to time as business requires and as agreed with the Directors
Requirements
- Have experience of fixed price contracts with good appreciation of commercial aspects.
- Have a minimum of 5 years’ experience successfully delivering Design and Build MEP projects within the commercial sector.
- Strong interpersonal skills, communication skills and a good team player.
- Project Management experience from inception through to site delivery and handover.

A Mechanical Design Engineer is required for a M&E design consultancy based in Waterloo. Our client specialises in large scale project throughout the UK such as Hotels, Student Accommodation, High End Residential, Commercial and Data Centres. The client is looking for a candidate from a Mechanical Engineering background and previous experience with a contractor or consultancy is a must. The candidate will be working amongst a team, so people skills and communication is important.
The Mechanical Design Engineer duties:
- Work with appointed main contractors/ developers to successfully deliver MEP design projects for the client within an agreed time & budget
- Engineering checks, including production of checking calculations, details, drawings and schematics to determine accuracy of design consultant work.
- Work in Autocad, Navis BIM and Hevacomp to investigate and interrogate consultancy design; occasionally making first hand design amendments if required.
- Track, manage and record further consultancy design deliverables as direct issue to client.
- Attend/organise external CPDs and attend/participate in internal CPDs
- Develop technical understanding of Low Carbon Technologies, Building Regulations and Local Sustainable Planning Policy.
- Undertake additional and independent learning on technical subjects and software training.
- Prepare high quality information as requested, including; technical specifications, designs, drawings, equipment schedules, survey reports
- Attend client meetings
